Wildfire Services: Completion of the Development Phase and Start of the Demonstration Phase.

The development phase of the Use Case 6 on “Wildfires: Mapping Events, danger, and recovery” has successfully reached completion. This milestone has resulted in the integration and deployment on the CopernicusLAC Platform of three thematic services related to wildfire prevention, wildfire monitoring and post-fire recovery.

During an online event held on February 11th, 2025 the service development team performed a live demonstration of the services developed in the context of the Use Case, showcasing the array of different service capabilities for a past wildfire event which happened in Chile at the beginning of 2023.

The Use Case development has now entered the demonstration phase, scheduled to span six months from February to July 2025, covering the current wildfires season.

The demonstration phase involves the pre-operational run of the three services over Colombia and Central America, providing fire danger information, NRT monitoring of thermal anomalies and ongoing wildfires, and information on vegetation recovery after the end of potentially active wildfires in the area.

Institutions from Colombia, Honduras and Guatemala that were involved in the service development phase, as well as selected parties from other interested organisations in the region, are granted access to the services within the Wildfires Results Explorer of the CopernicusLAC platform. Users of the platform are currently able to test the services and provide feedback, with the aim of continuously improving and tailoring them to the needs of local institutions and stakeholders during the planned operational roll-out of the services.

A general overview of the three services developed in the context of this Use Case can be found at the link below, while the CopernicusLAC Platform online user manual provides a more in-depth description of the services, including the EO data utilised, the processing algorithms and the outputs provided.
